The Gospel of Empty Hands – “God, Be Merciful to Me, a Sinner.”
In a world obsessed with lifting itself up — making a name, proving worth, and being remembered — today’s Gospel points us in the opposite direction: toward humility before God.
Humility isn’t grovelling; it’s grace. It isn’t self-pity; it’s truth.
When we stand before God, we won’t hold certificates or achievements. We’ll stand with empty hands — and that will be enough, because those hands are ready to receive mercy.
The good news is simple: mercy is given, grace is poured out, love is lavishly shared.
So may we, like the tax collector, have the courage to pray with honesty and simplicity:
“God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”
In that short prayer lies the secret of the kingdom —
the power that lifts the lowly,
the grace that raises the fallen,
and the promise that those who humble themselves will, in God’s good time, be exalted.
Amen.
